Soïg SIBERIL

The Man
    Soïg Siberil

Soïg is one of the most famous Breton guitarists and specially one of the very first to adapt the 'open-tuning' guitar style to Breton repertoire. As he discovers the guitar at the age of 18, he's interested by Blues but above all by american folksongs. As a Breton living in Paris, he turns very soon to Breton music and decides to move to Brittany at the age of 23. Settled in Glomel for all these years, he enters in his first Breton band there (Sked).
During the 70's, he meets Mícheál Ó Domhnaill. Mícheál shows him new guitar fingerstyles that are very well adapted to all kinds of Celtic musics. These fingerstyles were initiated by Davey Graham in the late 50s as he combined an advanced knowledge of the instrument and a restless musical intelligence to create a style of solo playing that was far more developed than his peers. Soïg adapted this 'open-tuning' style to Breton repertoire.
During the 80's, he founds 'Gwerz' which will soon become the seminal Breton band of these years like were the other bands he founded or took part to during this period (Pennoù Skoulm - Kornog - Kemia - Den).
He started in 1993 to record his own albums. Four C.D.s ('Digor !', 'Entre ardoise et granit', 'Gwenojenn' and 'Gitar') where he always invited his closer friends such as Jacques Pellen, Jacky Molard, Ronan Le Bars, Jean-Michel Veillon, Alain Genty, Didier Squiban...
Soïg today plays in solo, but also takes part to Les ours du scorff, 'Orion', to P.S.G. together with Jacques Pellen and Jean-Charles Guichen and also to 'Celtic Fiddle Festival' together with Chritian Lemaître, Johnny Cunningham, Kevin Burke.

«From Soïg's guitar, the music comes out of the wood, invading our inner landscapes where it is neither day nor night. It has the straight of heather buttressed against the wind, and the tenderness of a jubilating horse. It gives an impression of foreverness. It was there in the shadows before gushing from the maternal womb. It will still be there in the light after we have gone, more intimate to us than we ourselves. Soïg's music does not accompany our loneliness. It does away with it. Understand by that : you will never walk alone.»
