Gilles SERVAT

The Man

Gilles Servat
Born (by chance) in Tarbes (Southern France) in 1945 from Breton stock of the Naoned/Nantes Region . He spent his early childhood around Naoned/Nantes and Cholet and went in love with this very special part of Brittany : Enez Groe (Isle of Groix) in 1969. Year after, he took part in the growing wave of the early 70's Breton revival and finds its own original place in the Kelenn label which postponed with him at that same time such artists as Tri Yann an Naoned, Gweltaz, Kergiduff. His debut album was produced and recorded in 1972 on this Kelenn label. One song from this album, 'La blanche Hermine' became as popular as to become an anthem for the Bretons fighting for identity and social justice. It claims freedom for Brittany and for long (and forever !) will stick to Gilles this image of a Breton singing heroe - which is true !
On commercial grounds he sold quickly quantities of this special release which means he was labelled 'gold record artist' quite soon.
Year after he recorded his second album : 'L'Hirondelle' where powerful political lyrics went with poetry and traditional inspired songs such as 'Me zo ganet e kreiz ar Mor' written by Yann-Ber Kalloc'h, an Enez Groe/Isle of Groix-born bard.
He went along playing in a lot of places concerts or festivals all over Brittany and went to other places abroad. He also had some involvement into drama between 1973 and 1975, as he worked as an actor three movies and two theatre acts under the direction of Michel Ecoffart.
Then happened a new event: the recording of 'The foolish Albatross' together with the famous breton folk band 'Triskell'. This recording was the best we could expect from an alliance between such songwriter and folk band : brilliant !
At the Roazhon/Rennes 'Tombées de la Nuit' festival, June 1993, Gilles presented his long-flowed musical poem 'Le Fleuve' directed by Alain Mollot which was released into album soon after it was played.
Let us remind that Gilles is also a novel writer who wrote a fabulous four pieces novel inspired by celtic myths and legends : Les Chroniques d'Arcturus.
Same year, he enters the surprizing adventure of the 'Héritage des Celtes' led by Dan Ar Braz and takes part in its recordings.
He was signed by Sony music for a new album which was released in 1996 : 'Sur Les Quais de Dublin' where we can find guests such as Bagad Roñsed-Mor, Ronnie Drew, Andy Irvine and Rita Connolly…
In 1998 went out a new title: 'Touche pas à la Blanche Hermine', a strong amswer to the french 'Front National' (extreme right wing party in France) who had dared to use his own song 'La blanche Hermine' during its off-records meetings, by far, enough to provoque Gilles Servat's and all Bretons anger.
He took part to 'AR BED KELTIEK' 20'th Anniversary's Concert held on the 6th of November 1999.
With 'Comme je voudrai !', Gilles reacts strongly after the Erika disease in Brittany. A brilliant recording containing beautiful new songs and traditional songs readapted ('Marv eo ma Mestrez' ou 'Er soudarded zo gùisket é ru').     The 3 latest album deeply influenced by irish and scottish music, Gilles decided to fix this 3 CD work in one by making a compilation :
