a handful of feathers In this book you'll find the poems of Youenn Gwernig which were published between 1972 ( The hole in the door ), 1976 ( The stairs of steel ) and other poems written since then. Many of those poems were written in New York where he had been working between 1957 and 1969. Over there he mixed with the poets of the Beat Generation and he was a good friend to Jack Kerouac. This collection is bilingual, in breton and in english. Youenn Gwernig got the Langleiz price in 1996 for his poetry.

ON THE TOP OF MY LAND

Rocks, heathers and the wind :
i'm on the top of my land
rocks under the heather and bones
of people who lived in the past,
Ancestors :
the wind only carries news of the quick.

The dead are dead
two or three times dead
dead for good,
their ashes gone a long time ago,
relics, ashes,
their voices are heard in the wind no more :
the wind only carries news of the quick.

I'm on the top of my land :
up to the sky-line all around
the steeples of my land's parishes,
the quick are bringing flowers to their graveyard
for the ones who died lately ;
ossuaries, forgotten relics,
a carved angel is smiling its stony smile.
For the ones gone a long time, a long time ago
to the land of departed souls.

For the other ones
mixed up with bones, leather shoes,
helmets, scrap-iron,
foreign land
and rusted cans,
there is nothing.

Rocks, heather and the wind
singing on the top of my land :
its song only carries news of the quick.
